If you are from here then pronounce this name
With the recent increase in the population in the state of Montana, many wonder how to tell who “Is not from around here,” versus who has lived here for many years. Obviously, if they are driving a vehicle that has a California or a Texas plate, they are probably new to the area. Also, if they have a strong accent, most likely they haven’t been in the state for very long.
However great these tools are, I have figured out a better way to determine their “local” status. I have accumulated a list of places in Montana and will simply ask them to pronounce the name. I have one County and five towns. There are many more that would qualify for this list. Please send me more places that I need to add to randall.bogden@townsquaremedia.com so I can update my list. Here is what I have so far:
- Meagher County- a County of about 1900 people. White Sulphur Springs is the county seat
- Pronounced Mar
- Havre- County seat and largest town in Hill County- population over 9000
- Pronounced Have Er
- Hysham- County seat in Treasure County, around 280 residents
- Pronounced Hi Shum
- Joliet is in Carbon County southwest of Billings
- Pronounced Jawl E Et
- Kevin is in Toole County and has around 155 residents
- Pronounced Key Vin
- Wibaux is the only incorporated town in the County of Wibaux- population around 590
- Pronounced We Bow
Now it is your turn to send me names that should be on the list. Most likely, I have heard of them, but just in case give me the pronunciation as well. randall.bogden@townsquaremedia.com
