Americans Threaten To Leave The Country After Elections

Both sides are guilty of saying "If candidate X wins the election, I'm leaving the country," then candidate X wins said election, and no one leaves.

The most recent example is people from New York claiming they'd leave if Mamdani won the mayoral race, yet new reports have come out that say they've all changed their minds.

The Challenges Of Moving Abroad

Some people take their statement a bit more serious however, and actually start to look for a new location to live in.

First things first, it's very hard to move to a new country on a whim, especially when it's just because you didn't like the outcome of an election.

Top Countries Montana Residents Are Searching To Move To

I have a feeling quite a few people in Montana were happy with the 2024 election and had no plans on leaving America; the proof is in the fact that we rank #49 out of 50 when it comes to "leaving America" searches on Google.

However, in early 2025 citizenship renunciations jumped 102%, and international move consultants are saying that a majority of their clients are Americans moving abroad.

While just searching for a country to go to doesn't mean you'll actually start the process of moving there, here are the top 3 countries Montana residents are looking to move to most.

1. Ireland

With almost 15% of our population being Irish, seeing Ireland come up as the most searched for location isn't that surprising.  What is surprising is that with 27% of our population being German, Germany didn't make the top 3.

2. New Zealand

I mean, I see it; if you're going to leave Montana, you might as well get as far away as possible, plus no more winter.

3. Canada

This makes a lot of sense, and it was a very popular pick for those living closer to the northern border. It's close, you could drive there, and it probably wouldn't feel much different from where you live now.
