When it comes to driving under the influence or DUIs, Montana has for a long time now been very forgiving and lenient—maybe too lenient.
A 2017 study by Wallet Hub looked at every state's leniency for DUIs, and with #1 being the most strict and #50 being the most lenient, Montana came in at #40.

Montana Has Had A Drunk Driving Issue For A Long Time
It's no secret to anyone who has lived here long enough to know that Montana has a problem when it comes to drinking and driving.
Heck, for a long time, it was perfectly legal for someone to have an open container in their vehicle.
It wasn't until 2005 that it was made illegal for your passenger to have an open container.

All Six Montana Counties Rank Among The Top 15 For Most Fatal DUI Accidents
It would be one thing to have six counties show up on the list that the Scott Vicknair Law Firm compiled by looking at the data from 2017 to 2021, but to have all six be in the top 15 is a pretty bad look.
It should not be a surprise to most residents to see this many counties show up on the list, however, because Montana currently ranks number one for drunk drivers, according to Forbes Advisors.
