Montana Medical Board Revokes Helena Doctor’s License

One year after the Montana State Medical Board renewed a controversial Helena doctor's license for two years, the board has now revoked that same doctor's license.

Dr. Thomas Weiner, the former Helena cancer doctor who has been accused of prescribing unnecessary treatments and harming patients, will no longer be allowed to practice medicine in Montana.

Background On The Dr. Thomas Weiner Case

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, in 2020, St. Peter’s Health in Helena fired Dr. Weiner after it was revealed that:

“harm that was caused to patients by receiving treatments, including chemotherapy, that were not clinically indicated or necessary; failure to meet state and federal laws associated with the prescribing of narcotics; failure to refer patients to other specialists for appropriate treatments; and failure to meet requirements associated with clinical documentation.”

Investigators found that seven patients were given improper care. That included one patient who wasn't diagnosed with cancer but died from toxicity related to chemotherapy treatments.

Community Reaction And License Surrender

Dr. Weiner had built a reputation in Helena as a miracle worker, keeping some people alive for over a decade even after Stage 4 lung cancer diagnoses.

Today there are still signs adorning windows across Helena supporting him, but the doctor told the state's licensing attorneys that he “does not intend to practice medicine again in Montana. Therefore, he has agreed to surrender his Montana physician license.”

Families Of Patients React To The Decision

The widow of one of the patients Dr. Weiner treated told the Montana Free Press the following:

“I think on some level it does bring some justice, maybe a little bit of justice, to the victims and their families, just knowing that he won’t be able to do that anymore.”
