The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, suggests not driving during the winter if conditions are bad.

However, we here in Montana know that sometimes it's unavoidable and you need to venture out, and that's where your winter survival kit helps.

Before we get into the gallery of items that go into a winter survival kit, there is more one thing to remember: snow tires.

If you do use snow tires, you can only use them from October 1st to May 31st, according to Montana State Law.

Essential Winter Emergency Kit Items

Winter season in Montana means cold temperatures, heavy snow, and slick roads. Hopefully, you won't ever need to tap into your winter emergency kit, but it's better to have one in your car than to be unprepared. Make sure you have these essential items in your car before winter arrives in Montana.
