Heads Up, Montana Drivers! Your Driver’s License Info Might Be For Sale

If it's not one thing, it's another and now people all across America are on high-alert following the latest news about a potential data breach.

And it's not like you can exactly change the information stolen.

Federal Authorities Warn of Potential Major Data Breach

Multiple outlets across the country are reporting about a potential data breach that could have compromised around 153 million driver's licenses.

That's right - 153 million. With that said, it's probably safe to say a Montanan or two's information is included in that number.

Oh, and it's not just Montanans who have to worry. Our friends up north in Canada also should be on the lookout as officials are reporting that around 1.1 million Canadian licenses have also been on a dark web site called Nexus according to Cyber Security News. Officials say the site is an "identity theft service" that offers up these licenses for sale.

The service was discovered on a Russian cybercrime forum on August 31, which was reportedly "advertising access to identity documents belonging to more than 170 million people across North America."

How Do Hackers Get Our Driver's Licenses?

One cyber security outlet, Krebon Security, is suggesting that IDScan.net could be one of the ways hackers accessed driver's license information.

And according to Krebon Security, IDScan.net provides services for several businesses like Target, FedEx, and Hertz just to name a few.

Now, it's important to note that the feds are still investigating so no one, myself included, is saying that IDScan.net is the source but that theory has so legs if you're willing to go down the rabbit hole that an investigative reporter did.

IDScan.net has reportedly not confirmed they were the subject of a data breach. The site selling the information on the dark web, Nexus, has reportedly disappeared and can't be found since all of this information got out.
