Montana Spring Is Here You Can Tell By The Great Big Angry Clouds

Spring time in Montana can bring almost any type of weather. According to Extreme Weather Watch, the average high for Great Falls in April is 54.9 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 30.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
The record high for April in Great Falls is 89 degrees Fahrenheit set in 2012 and the record low was -10 Fahrenheit in 2002. Nothing like a 99 degree difference!

One of the things I enjoy is watching the clouds as they move, change color and shape before and after a storm. Spring time is a great time to do this as the clouds seem to change by the minute.
Warning- do not attempt to take photos during a thunder/ lightening/ hail storm! Although hail is not as common in the spring, it can happen. Hail is created when a strong updraft mixes with a cloud that is at freezing temperature or lower causing a release of hail. For a full definition click --> HERE
Some stories from past generations warn of color in the clouds. I have been told the pink is an indicator of hail. Either way the picture above is cool to look at!
There are several types of clouds that can bring moisture according to earth science
- Altocumulus - can bring some precipitation
- Altostratus - can bring rain or snow
- Stratocumulus - can bring light rain or drizzle
- Stratus - can bring minor precipitation
- Nimbostratus - can bring constant precipitation
- Cumulonimbus - can bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, or light showers
