I love the Fourth of July as much as the next person, but I'm not going to lie; after having two pets that are deathly scared of loud noises, my thoughts on fireworks have changed slightly over the years.

Let's be honest: there's nothing better than firing off a massive fireworks display to paint the night sky with beautiful colors, but unfortunately, those beautiful colors come with a rather loud crack of noise.

Although the loud crack doesn't scare most of us, the same can't be said for our pets.

I'm not an expert on the matter or a veterinarian, but some things tend to help with loud noises and keep pets from losing their minds.

Prepare Your Pets For the 4th Of July.

  • Leading up to the fireworks, get your pets outside and take them for a long walk. We found that this helps burn off energy and calms your pet's touch during loud noises.
  • Soundproof your house as best as possible. Close all windows, doors, curtains, shades, and anything else that will help dampen the noise.
  • Ensure your pets are microchipped, and their identification is up-to-date in case your pet is to get out.

Keeping Pets Calm During Fireworks

  • Stay calm! If you get nervous, you can bet your bottom dollar that your pet will be just as nervous, if not more so.
  • Keep your pet distracted with toys and treats.
  • Our pets generally like to stay close to us, so be ready to cuddle up.
  • Touch base with your vet beforehand to talk about potential calming aids. We have a pill for our dogs that seems to work pretty well.

Everybody loves to go out and watch the fireworks, but if possible, stay home with your pets.

Just think about how scared you would be if you were left alone and didn't understand the loud noises.

Banned Pets by States

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
