New Reports of HAB’s in Montana Lakes as Summer Winds Down

I know that there are still a few weeks left of summer, and a lot of us are trying to cram as much of the outdoor fun in that we can.  I've been trying to make as many tee times and tournaments as possible; or at least as many as my wife allows me to.

If you're heading out over the next few weekends to squeeze some more excitement in, make sure you are watching for HAB's.  Those are the big green harmful algal blooms that seem to rear their ugly head right around this time across some of the most popular water recreation areas in the state.

New Reports of HAB's in Montana Lakes as Summer Winds Down

As the heat continues, the perfect conditions have been happening to create the HAB's in Montana.  Some of the most used lakes are seeing blooms appear, even causing certain areas into closure including two at Hebgen Lake.

According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), over a dozen Montana lakes have HAB's in the "caution advisory" category for the public.  Areas affected include Hauser, Holter, Lake Helena and more.

What HAB's Are and How to Report Them to the DEQ in Montana

The DEQ and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend people and pets not to enter waterways that are contaminated with a HAB.  They may be harmful, with the CDC saying that "Harmful algal blooms cause a variety of mild to serious illnesses. Symptoms depend on the type of harmful algal bloom you come in contact with and how you are exposed."

If you encounter a harmful algal bloom, the Montana DEQ allow you to report one using their online form here.  Once reported, "Montana DEQ staff will be automatically notified to review your observation and take the appropriate next steps."
