Does Hollywood Think Montana Isn't a Scary Place?

The state of Montana has been featured in an amazing number of films over the years.  Some of those feature blockbusters have even been filmed in our picturesque state.  Even in my home city of Great Falls.

Western style movies are probably the most that would have the state in them, with maybe a drama, comedic romance and action thrown in.  Anyone remember when Hollywood blew up part of Paris Gibson Square?  Or the scenes shot near the Hardy Creek Bridge?

This Movie Genre Seems to Avoid Montana Like Dracula with Garlic

While Hollywood may love the country flavor that Montana has to offer, they don't think we are very scary up in the northern states.  According to data from Insure My Trip, our state ranks near the bottom for horror films.

Besides Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine with a big goose egg zero, Montana is in the next lowest category.  But states like California, Texas and Florida have film setting locations in over 500 films!

Are Horror Movie Makers Afraid of Montana?

So, what's the deal here Hollywood?  Are the bears and cold keeping you away from creating a horror movie in our state?  Have they never been part of trying to sort cattle with your significant other or your offspring?  Talk about some scary scenes!

Seriously, though.  Why aren't more of these films featuring Montana?  Mountains, break country, larger cities, small towns and campsites that just beg to have their own Jason running around.  Can you imagine if that movie was filmed at Camp Rotary in the Belt Mountains?  Instant classic!
