Montana’s First Baby Box Brings Hope For Struggling Parents
In light of the tragedy in Lima on October 16, 2025, and the baby left on the steps of the subway in New York, I wanted to run this article again. There is always a better choice than abuse or neglect.
What Is A Safe Haven Baby Box?
From the Safe Haven Baby Box website:
Safe Haven Baby Boxes offer a compassionate and secure option for mothers in crisis who are unable to care for their newborns. Designed with innovative safety features and installed on the exterior walls of fire stations and hospitals, each box ensures the safe and anonymous surrender of infants.--shbb.org
Montana Has A Safe Haven Law
It's called the Montana Newborn Protection Act:
"The Safe Haven law helps parents who decide they cannot take care of a newborn baby under the age of 30 days. Parents can give up a baby to any hospital, fire department, police or sheriff's department or to another emergency services provider. The law protects parents from being charged with a crime involving the abandonment as long as the baby does not show signs of abuse or neglect."--DPHHS Montana
Billings Is The First Town In Montana To Have A Safe Haven Baby Box
The Safe Haven Baby Box should be in Billings by June, 2025.

What Can You Do If You Find Yourself In This Position?
Do the right thing and surrender the baby to someone. You don't have to wait for the box. You can go to any hospital, fire, police or sheriff's department and safely surrender the baby. No one is going to do anything to you as long as the baby hasn't been abused.
