In Montana: Can I Keep An Amazon Package I Didn’t Order?
I'm pretty sure that we have all been there in recent times.
An package from Amazon, E-Bay, or any other online retailer shows up on your door step that doesn't have your name on it but the address is there. Maybe some one got the address wrong, maybe someone forgot to change their shipping address when ordering having reoccurring orders for toiletries, food, clothing or whatever the case may be.
It sits in the door way for awhile as you stare at it wondering what's in there, where or who does it really go to, and is the opening of mail federal offense everyone screams about true.
Well, don't go opening random people's letters, yeah, that's illegal.
As far as packages that are placed on your door step that you didn't order? Can you keep those?
Turns out you can!
According to the Federal Trade Commission or the FTC's consumer advice on your rights to unordered merchandise, it's completely cool to open it and keep it if you would like.
It says right on the website:
By law, companies can’t send unordered merchandise to you, then demand payment. That means you never have to pay for things you get but didn’t order. You also don’t need to return unordered merchandise. You’re legally entitled to keep it as a free gift.
It's nice to know you won't get hauled off for opening a parcel that isn't yours, however you might have to deal with the intended receiver if they come looking for it. That might get weird depending on what's inside the package.
Has this happened to you? Have you opened it? Let us know on social media.
