Are There Really Stores In Montana That Won't Take Cash?

Seriously. When I first saw this I was like, "Of Course. Who had it on their 2024 Bingo card that cash is NOT king anymore." It would be just like the last few years to be "Yep, we're done with cash in America. Now everyone is buying things with paperclips and thumbtacks. Bet you wish you'd stocked up on them when the rumors were swirling it was our new currency". Of COURSE we're not done with CASH in America. If America HAD a king, that king would be cash.

I recently saw where cash could be turned down at stores like Walmart, Target and Costco, ATM's and banks. Is this even true? The short answer is "yes, but".

Sale. Off. Looks Like The Kroger/Albertsons Merger Is Off

Yes, but the money needs to be damaged. It's called mutilated currency.

What Exactly Is Mutilated Currency?

They aren't talking about those elusive gigantic bills most of us in America have heard of and never seen. The $500, $1,000 and even a $10,000 bill aren't being made anymore, but they do exist and they're still in circulation.

Mutilated currency is damaged money. Maybe it was buried in the backyard for decades, maybe it was in a home that caught on fire, maybe it's been through so many hands it's falling apart.

America and American businesses are cracking down on the damaged bank notes in 2025. And they are perfectly within their rights to do so.

What Happens If You Are The Owner Of Mutilated Currency?

You can submit that bank note to the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Mutilated Currency Division. (It sounds like a new crime show for the 1%.)

The BEP will look at your submitted claim, and decide if your claim is fit for a mutilated currency redemption. There are several rules, so click here to make sure your money falls under the redemption guidelines.
