Almost Every Montanan Drives

Born, raised, and if I'm doing it right, dying in Montana, I've driven a lot of roads. Highways, dirt roads, interstate and gravel.  Believe it or not, I'm actually almost more comfortable on a gravel road than any other.  I think it's because it's what I learned to drive on, but I digress.

The older I get, the less I like to drive in the Winter.  Especially over passes and such.  My anxiety just PINGS through the roof.  I usually end up going slower than I really need to, I stiffen up, get grumpy and wish I still smoked.   There isn't a tire on the planet that's going to save you from black ice.  All the care in the world isn't going to save you from a careless driver.  Top all of that with being in 3 pretty good car accidents, (all 3 before I was 24) and yeah.  You can see why I get so anxious, right?

Winter Can Mean Some Treacherous Roads In Big Sky Country

Winter is here, as the Stark Family says, and it got me thinking about all the places I won't be going because of the roads.  Helena, Butte, Missoula.  Nope.  You can just have those passes in the winter.

There Are 5 Treacherous Winter Roads In The Treasure State

I got most of this information from a blog from The Advocates, Montana Kamin, and AAA.

I thought for sure Wolf Creek Canyon or Homestake Pass would make this list, and they did not.  I did some internet research and this is what I found out about the most dangerous roads in Montana. Not the ones my prissy winter driving is scared the most by.

One was an absolute shock to me.  The Icy Gauntlet of Death.  Good god.  Who would even drive a road with a nickname like that in the winter?  It's the road from Bozeman to Yellowstone.  You can make a good bet you won't run into me there in the Winter.

For all the drivers who have nightmares of icy roads, like me, I made you this gallery.

Good luck driving this winter.  May the odds be forever in your favor.
