Online dating can be scary. Heck, the first day of school is scary. You don't know anyone, will they like you, are they going to be nice or make fun of you, who will you sit with at lunch?

Online dating is kind like the first day of school right? You are throwing yourself to the wolves in hopes of making new friends and being liked. You dress for success and hope for the best day of your life. Like a first date.

When we grow up and enter the world of dating, the first day of school analogy is nice, but it can be even a bit more scary. Luckily we have resources that will help us stay safe and hopefully find a connection with someone who is actually who they say they are.

Here are 5 ways to easily add safety to your online dating.

Make sure someone you know, a friend or family member, has your date details. Where are you going, what time, with who, and what time you are expecting the date to be done. If plans change throughout the date, maybe you totally hit it off, update your friend with the change.

Creep them. We love to put our lives on social media so take advantage of it. Search their Insta, Facebook, X, even the LinkedIn. Make sure they are who they are representing themselves as.

Turn on your location or share your location with a friend. Whether it is through your snapchat, the share location feature on your phone, or allow 'live location'. This may seem a bit crazy, but it's important for someone to know your location, at least for the first couple of dates.

Facetime/video call your date before agreeing to go out with them. You want to make sure you know who you are looking for and you also want to make sure that the person they portrayed themselves as, is accurate. You don't want to end up on MTV's hit series Catfish.

Don't drink too much. You want to make sure that you are in complete control of yourself when you are on your date. I know it's easy to have a couple before going out to get rid of some of the nerves, but you don't want to over do it.

Lastly, meet in a public place for the first date. If your date is pressuring you to come to their place OR go to yours for the first date, it's a red flag. You don't want them to know where you live in case things don't go as planned, and you don't want to be stuck at their place and feel trapped. Public is a must.

Good luck on all your future dates! Hopefully you are already using these tips, if not, make sure you do.
