Like it or not, winter in Montana is on the way. Although with the warm temps we've been experiencing, we're not really sure when that is going to happen.

For those who aren't big fans of months of snow, freezing temperatures, and slick roads, winter is more than likely your least favorite time of year.  However, if you embrace the winter months and enjoy all of the activities that come with it, well, this is good news for you.

As people continue to move to Montana from warmer climates, winter can be a bit of a slap in the face. Especially if you're moving here from a state that doesn't typically see snow, or if it does, they just shut everything down for a few days. (Spoiler Alert: we don't do that here.)

The truth is, that winter can be rough here in Montana and the folks over at Shareably came out with their list of the Top 10 States Ranked Worst For Winter and it won't come as too much of a surprise that Montana made the list.

Where does Montana rank when it comes to bad winters?

As we mentioned, Montana makes the Top 10 States Ranked Worst For Winter, however, we came in 9th place. That's right, 8 states have it worse than we do here in Big Sky Country.

Having said that, Montana can still be a very dangerous place during the winter months, especially in the higher elevations. Dangerous roads, the chance of avalanches, and freezing temperatures are all real threats.  Make sure as you travel across the state during the winter months that you have the appropriate tires and always have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle.

Last year, we bought spiked tires for one of our vehicles and they worked like a charm, plus you can keep them on until May here in Montana.

Winter can be brutal here in Montana with lots of wind, snow, and temperatures well below zero. In fact, that alone should be a word of warning for those thinking of moving here from warmer climates.

A lot goes into being prepared to live in a state with rough winters and if you've never done it before, you certainly need to make sure that you are prepared. You need to make sure you have the right tires, vehicle, and winter clothing. Plus, I would highly suggest you learn how to drive in winter conditions before moving to a state that celebrates winter 6 months out of the year.

And while winters can be very rough here in Montana, we don't even crack the Top 5 for States With The Most Brutal Winters.
