Today, the Montana Highway Patrol announced the Big Horn County Sheriff, Darrell King, was killed in a two-vehicle crash.

According to MHP, the crash occurred yesterday, November 19th, at 5:05 PM on U.S. Highway 212 at mile marker 2.

The location of the accident is within Big Horn County and four miles southeast of Crow Agency.

MHP determined, as part of their investigation, that a commercial motor vehicle collided head-on with a passenger vehicle driven by Sheriff Darrell King. The vehicle Sheriff King was driving was not a Big Horn County Vehicle.

Sheriff King was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash, and at this time, speed and/or impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash. This incident is still under investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol.

Montana Highway Patrol Colonel Lavin shared this with the state:

I was saddened to hear of this recent tragedy and loss amongst the law enforcement community. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Sheriff King and the Big Horn County Sheriff's Office.

On Facebook, Senator Steve Daines weighed in:

Saddened by the passing of Darrell King, Big Horn County Sheriff. His time in the U.S. Marines, BIA, Sheriff’s Office & beyond is a testament to his devotion to looking out for others. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones & the law enforcement family he leaves behind.

Also on X, Senator Jon Tester shared his thoughts:

Devastated to hear about the loss of Big Horn County Sheriff Darrell King, a dedicated veteran and beloved member of Montana’s law enforcement community. Sharla and my hearts go out to Sheriff King’s family, friends, and colleagues as we mourn his loss.

As did Governor Greg Gianforte on X:

Please join Susan and me in praying for his family, colleagues in law enforcement, and community.
